Can a Locksmith Cut a Broken Key?

The short answer is yes, a skilled locksmith can often cut a new key from a broken one, depending on the type of key and how much of it is still intact.

Cylinder Keys

If the key is broken but both pieces are present, especially for a cylinder lock, a professional locksmith can usually piece the key back together and cut a new one. If the locksmith also has the lock in hand, that makes the job even more accurate.

If part of the key is missing, we can use a method called impressioning. This involves using the remaining part of the key and inserting it into the lock to get an impression from the internal pins. With this, we can reconstruct and cut a fully functioning replacement.

Mortice Keys

Broken mortice lock keys are a common issue, especially where one of the prongs has snapped off. The good news is that most mortice keys are cut using what’s called the ABA range, which means the key is symmetrical, with both halves cut identically. Because the key has to operate from both sides of the door, a skilled locksmith (like Midlands Locksmiths) can usually deduce the missing cuts and reproduce a working key, even from a broken one.

Dimple Keys

Dimple keys are a bit more complex. If you have all the broken pieces, we can usually decode and clone the key. Many dimple keys also come with a key card, which contains a code that allows us to cut a new key to the exact original specification; there is no need for the broken key at all.

At Midlands Locksmiths, we’ve seen it all, broken car keys, snapped mortice keys, damaged fobs, you name it. If you’ve broken your key, call one of our mobile locksmiths, and we’ll do everything we can to cut you a new one.
