Can a Locksmith Copy a Broken Key?

Can a Locksmith Copy a Broken Key?

At Midlands Locksmiths, we often get asked: “Can you copy a broken key?” The short answer is yes, in most cases, we can! If your key has snapped in two or become bent or worn down over time, don’t panic. We may not be able to repair your broken key, but our skilled locksmiths can usually reproduce a fully functional replacement from one of our mobile vans.

How Do Locksmiths Copy Broken Keys?

When a key breaks, it might seem like it’s game over. But for a professional locksmith, your broken key is still a valuable blueprint. Here’s how we can help:

Give us the Pieces

If both parts of the broken key are available, we can line them up and take accurate measurements. This allows us to cut a new key to match the original shape.

Using Key Code Databases

In some cases, if the key is too damaged or the pieces don’t align well, we may be able to identify the key from a code (often stamped on the lock or key). We can use this code to cut a new key from scratch.

Using the Lock to Decode

If there’s no code and the key is too far gone, we can also use the lock itself to ‘decode’ the pin or lever positions and create a new working key.

What Types of Keys Can Be Copied If Broken?

  • House keys – including cylinder and mortice locks

  • Padlock keys – even if they’ve been heavily worn

  • Car keys – we can often clone or reprogram a replacement key for your car, depending on the make and model

  • Security keys – if they’re part of a master key system, we may need proof of ownership

What If the Key Snapped in the Door Lock?

If your key has broken inside the lock, it’s best to call a professional locksmith straight away. Attempting to get the key out of the lock yourself can cause further damage. We can carefully remove the broken part of the key and either cut a new one on the spot or recommend a replacement lock if necessary. We operate an emergency lock opening service for customers in Coventry,  Leicester, and throughout the West Midlands, so if you find yourself in this position, please get in touch.

Can You Copy a Key That’s Been Glued Together?

We don’t recommend trying to glue your key back together, as the glue can interfere with the lock and make things worse. If you’ve already tried, don’t worry; just bring your broken key to us directly, and we’ll see what we can do.
